Sigüenza is a beautiful medieval city situated in the province of Guadalajara in the region of Castilla-La Mancha, just 120 km from central Madrid and 190 km from Zaragossa - home to Expo 2008 - on the main A2 highway. Together with easy road access, regular trains serve the city and Madrid International airport is just 50 minutes away.
The city’s architecture reflects the convergence of the various cultures that formed it – Christian, Muslim and Jewish – all of which contributed to the city. It is the seat of the Diocese of Guadalaraja and Sigüenza and boasts a wonderful early medieval cathedral, a Diocesan museum and the Episcopal Palace as well as the imposing castle.
The C12th castle, which dominates the city, was also home to the city’s Bishops – who were then of a more military style – and was recently converted into one of the most beautiful Parador chain Hotels.
Despite the decline in the population experienced by Sigüenza as a consequence of the proximity of great urban centres such as Madrid, Guadalajara and Zaragossa, Sigüenza has a dynamic population and many thriving intellectual, artistic and cultural activities. The city acts as a centre to the many local villages and also a great number of visitors and tourists who come to see a thriving and authentic medieval city and the wonderful countryside – an extraordinary city still unspoiled by industry or urbanisation.
